Thin porcelain facings bonded to the front of your teeth. Veneers change shape and shade more than any other cosmetic option, and they are the one treatment on this site that permanently alters the tooth underneath.
What a veneer is, and what it costs you
A veneer is a thin shell of porcelain, made individually for one tooth and bonded to its front surface. Because the porcelain covers rather than lightens, it changes shade and shape at the same time, and it does so on teeth that whitening cannot touch.
The trade-off is permanent. A thin layer of enamel has to come off to make room, otherwise the veneer sits proud and looks bulky. That enamel does not grow back, so from then on the tooth will always need a veneer or a crown on it. This is the part worth thinking about properly.
For that reason I will often suggest whitening, or composite bonding, or aligners first. If those get you where you want to be, you keep your enamel. If they genuinely will not, porcelain is an excellent treatment and I will tell you that too.
What veneers do better than anything else
Veneers are the strongest tool for changing shade and shape together across several teeth at once. They are also the least reversible, so the bar for recommending them is higher.
Large shade changes
Teeth that whitening cannot lift, including tetracycline staining and deep intrinsic marks. Porcelain covers rather than lightens, so the starting shade matters far less.
Reshaping a whole smile line
Six or eight teeth brought to a consistent shape, length and proportion. This is what people mean by a smile makeover, and porcelain holds it for a decade or more.
Teeth already heavily restored
Where old fillings cover much of the front surface there is little enamel left to bond composite to. Case Y008 on the crowns page is this situation.
How much do veneers cost in the UK?
Veneers are priced per tooth, and the honest comparison is against composite bonding rather than against other veneer providers. Porcelain costs roughly three to four times more per tooth and lasts roughly twice as long.

Veneers are not available on the NHS as a cosmetic treatment. NHS treatment for a front tooth is limited to what is clinically necessary to restore function, which in practice usually means a filling or a crown rather than a veneer.

What treatment involves
Two appointments about three weeks apart, with temporaries in between and a laboratory stage that cannot be rushed.
Step 1
Consultation
Whether veneers are right, or whether bonding or whitening would get you most of the way for far less. Written fixed-fee quote before anything is booked.
Step 2
Planning and mock-up
Photographs, shade selection against your own face, and on larger cases a trial smile bonded temporarily so you can see the shape before any tooth is touched.
Step 3
Preparation and temporaries
A thin layer of enamel is removed, then a scan or impression goes to the laboratory. You leave with temporary veneers the same day. This is the irreversible step.
Step 4
Laboratory stage, about 3 weeks
A technician builds each veneer individually, layering porcelain to match the translucency of your own teeth. Rushing this is where cheap veneer work goes wrong.
Step 5
Fit appointment
Each veneer is tried in, checked for shade and fit, then bonded. The bite is adjusted and everything polished. If a shade is not right, it goes back rather than gets fitted.
How long porcelain veneers last
Ten to fifteen years
Roughly double composite bonding. Porcelain does not stain or dull the way composite does, so a veneer at year ten usually looks much as it did at year one.
The margin fails before the porcelain does
Failures are nearly always at the join between veneer and tooth, where decay or gum recession sets in. That makes hygiene visits and gum health the deciding factor, not the material.
Grinding is the main risk
Porcelain is strong in compression and brittle under shear. If you grind, you need a nightguard from day one. A cracked veneer is replaced rather than repaired, at full cost.

All three change how a front tooth looks. They differ in how much tooth is removed, how long they last, and how much they cost.

If a tooth is broken or has been root treated, a veneer is the wrong choice and a crown is the right one. Veneers need sound tooth behind them to bond to.

Frequently asked questions
How much do composite veneers cost compared with porcelain?
Composite veneers in the UK typically run £150 to £350 a tooth in 2026, against roughly £900 to £1,400 for porcelain. Composite is one visit and reversible. Porcelain lasts about twice as long, resists staining, and changes shade far more. Both fees are in the table above.
Veneers or composite bonding, which should I have?
Bonding if you want a modest improvement cheaply, reversibly, and in one visit. Porcelain if you need a big shade change, want maximum durability, or the teeth are already heavily restored. On younger patients with healthy enamel I usually recommend bonding first.
How long do porcelain veneers last?
Ten to fifteen years is a realistic expectation, and well-maintained veneers on a good bite go longer. What fails is usually not the porcelain itself but the margin where it meets the tooth, which is why gum health and regular hygiene visits matter so much.
When should you not have veneers?
If you grind heavily without a nightguard, if you have active gum disease or untreated decay, or if your teeth are crowded and need moving first. Also if the only issue is shade, because whitening is cheaper and removes no tooth. I will say so.
Do veneers ruin your natural teeth?
They do not ruin them, but they do permanently change them. A thin layer of enamel is removed to make room, and that cannot be put back, so the tooth will always need a veneer or crown from then on. That commitment is the real decision.
Will they look like obvious fake teeth?
Only if they are made too white, too uniform and too flat. Natural teeth vary slightly in shade and shape and are not perfectly symmetrical. Good veneers copy that. We agree the shade against your own face rather than against a brochure.
What happens between the two appointments?
You wear temporary veneers, made at the first visit. They look reasonable but are not as strong or as well fitting as the finished porcelain, so avoid very hard or sticky food for those three weeks. They also let you live with the new shape before it is final.
Can a single veneer be matched to my other teeth?
Usually yes, and it is the hardest thing in cosmetic dentistry. A single front tooth has to match its neighbour exactly in shade, translucency and surface texture. It takes good laboratory photography and sometimes a second try. I would rather do that than fit a poor match.
